We use
a Vanguard V6500 centrifuge to degass the
epoxy before injecting it into the ferrule. These units run
smooth and work great. The centrifuges below were not used in our
production facility. We purchased these for the purpose of resale.
All V6500 units have been checked out, thoroughly cleaned and any needed parts have been
replaced.
Why do we degass our epoxy before applying?
Gaseous bubbles trapped
in a liquid, although initially microscopic in size, will expand
when heated and can grow to become large enough to cause problems.
Centrifuging can also be used to remove air from
unfilled adhesives. By
centrifuging the material at 1,000-3,000 rpm for 1-2 minutes will
remove any entrapped air in the adhesive.
For some applications degassing of the adhesive is
necessary. Vacuum degassing and centrifuge are common methods to
remove entrapped air. Vacuum degassing requires an ordinary vacuum
pump and vacuum chamber. An efficient pump should be capable of
pulling a vacuum of 29 inches Hg at a quick rate of speed. Vacuum
should be held for minimum amount of time to remove the entrapped
air. Try to minimize the amount of time the vacuum is applied and do
not create a “rolling boil” effect. Care should be taken that
only a small amount of adhesive is filled into a large container
(typically 5-10 times the adhesive volume). During the vacuum
process, the adhesive swells up considerably and can spill out of
the container. Applied vacuum along with agitation/vibration will
effectively remove any entrapped air.
